Boston, Feby 22d 1876 My dear Sir, I am pleased to learn that my first paper on American Literature, in the Feby. Harper, attracted your attention. the second, and concluding paper, in the March number, you will find a reference to Thoreau. It was inevitable that in going over so wide a field, I should be [page break] compelled to give short space to writers whom you and I warmly esteem. It is my intention to publish in the spring a volume consisting of short essays _ some seventy - five in number. I hope it will please you. Very Sincerely Yours, E.P. Whipple
